Using Your Fan and Air Conditioner in New Castle

April 13, 2016

The weather is finally getting warmer and soon you might have to change over to your air conditioner. Along with setting up your annual air conditioner service with the experts at Central Heating & Plumbing, there are some other tasks you can do to keep cozy and save money throughout the year.

During the in-between season in New Castle, those far too few spring temps, you likely use ceiling fans to keep cozy. Did you know that operating your ceiling fan along with your air conditioner could not only keep you more cozy during the warmer days, but also save you on your bills? In order to do that you have to make sure you’re utilizing ceiling fans and your air conditioning properly. Here’s a handful of things to remember:

Raise Your Thermostat

This is where the cost savings can potentially come in. If you aren’t raising your thermostat you won’t be saving on your bills. Raising your thermostat by a few degrees, in addition to utilizing your ceiling fan, shouldn’t change your comfort level too much. For every degree you raise your temperature, you’re lessening the period of the “on” cycle of your air conditioner.

Adjust Air Direction

Ceiling fans have a clockwise and counterclockwise setting to adjust according to the season. During the warmer months you’ll want to ensure the air is blowing down. You can stand below the fan to see if you feel a breeze. If you don’t, switch the direction. Ceiling fans do not actually cool your air, but they make you feel cooler. It’s the wind chill effect. You’ll feel cooler than what the thermostat says.

Turn Off Fan When You’re Not There

Treat your ceiling fan like you do lights, turn it off when leaving a room. If no one is in the room to benefit from the wind chill that a fan provides you’re wasting energy by using your fan. Don’t forget, a fan doesn’t actually cool your air, it just moves your air.
