Thermostat settings are hugely dependent on individual preference and what you consider to be home comfort for you and your family. However, if you consult with one of our technicians about how you can use your thermostat to save cash during your annual furnace service appointment, they will most likely provide a few things to consider this winter.
- While it's nice to constantly be saving money because you have your thermostat at a lower setting, it could wind up costing more if you set it too low. The best spot is turning your thermostat back 10-15 degrees Fahrenheit/5-7 degrees Celsius for 8 hours, as it can save you between 5 and 15 percent on your heating bills each year, according to Energy.gov.
- If your thermostat is set too cold or you completely shut off your furnace, you could risk freezing your pipes. This, of course, can create huge problems for all of the uninsulated pipes in your home. Most kitchen and bathroom pipes aren't insulated, so if they freeze, they could burst and cause serious water damage to your home.
- Condensation is also a problem when you have your thermostat set too low. Your furnace service technician can help show you areas where this condensation could occur, so when you choose a temperature, you can be sure it's not going to potentially cause damage to any of the wood or electronics inside your home.
Your home comfort is justifiably one of the most important things to stay on top of this winter, as it should be. Just because you want to save a little money in the process doesn’t mean that you can’t keep comfortable either. Be sure to talk with one of our furnace service technicians if you have any questions about keeping your home comfy this season.
