Your air conditioner has worked hard this summer and we still have some more heat coming. Just because the date on the calendar has moved over to fall doesn’t mean you’re finished with your AC for the season. Keeping up with annual AC maintenance, while also following a couple other tricks, can help you maintain your air conditioner while remaining cozy too.
Clean Around Your Outdoor Unit
Debris can build up around your outside unit, specifically during the fall. When the time comes to rake up the leaves in your yard, be sure to rake up the leaves and debris around your air conditioner. Debris can impact air flow, causing your system to work harder and wear down sooner. We want your air conditioner to last as long as it was designed to.
Raise the Temperature on Your Thermostat
Set your thermostat at the highest temperature you can while still being comfortable. Whenever possible, use other cooling methods such as fans. The lower you set your thermostat
, the harder your system will have to work to get to that temperature. You may think turning your unit off completely will save on energy and help your system, but that creates more work for it to make up when you turn it back on. It will have to work harder for a longer amount of time, which is something else that could lead to untimely system failure.
