You can’t depend on the weather in New Castle, but one thing the team at Central Heating & Plumbing wants you to be able to count on is your heating and cooling system. Having a comfortable home isn’t a seasonal thing, it’s something you need all year. When your furnace is having problems you may think that means a furnace repair can be expected in your future. That may not be the case. If your furnace hasn’t been its usual, stable self as of late, there are a couple of things a homeowner can do before calling in the experts at Central Heating & Plumbing.

Check the Thermostat

We have received calls where we simply had to switch a thermostat from “cool” to “heat”. While setting the thermostat for the season, a homeowner can easily forget to flip the switch, telling your heating and cooling system what you want it to do.

Something else to look over while you’re at the thermostat is the battery. Most digital thermostats give a low battery warning, but if it’s been a while since you’ve changed batteries it may be time for a change. It’s another easy fix that could save you a repair call.

Check the Filter

A dirty air filter can create all sorts of complications. Not only will a dirty filter hinder your system’s efficiency and stifle air flow, it could also cause an unexpected breakdown. Changing the filter in your heating and cooling system is easy and it can play a big role in keeping your system functioning at its best.

Check the Switches

The first switch you’ll want to investigate is the breaker for your furnace. Occasionally a problem can be as minor as a tripped breaker or blown fuse.

Check the Vents

A frequent misconception is that a homeowner should shut the vents in unused rooms. This could actually lead to a furnace repair down the road. Closed vents cause higher pressure inside your duct system and cause your system to work harder than it needs to.

If you’ve been through our troubleshooting tips and you’re still having problems the team at Central Heating & Plumbing are always there for you to make sure all of your home comfort needs are met. Give us a call at 724-401-1843.
